Compilación del conjunto de la producción escrita en temas políticos, ideológicos y periodísticos del dirigente comunista chileno Jorge Insunza Becker (1936-2019). Jorge Insunza Becker (April 21, 1936-March 17, 2019) was one of the main leaders of the Chilean Communist Party since the 1960s. He joined the Communist Youth in 1954. In 1962 he was promoted to the Central Committee of the PC and from 1965 he was part of his Political Commission, the one that led the triumph of Salvador Allende in 1970. After the 1973 coup d'√©tat, he was part of the first clandestine communist leadership that assumed the resistance to the dictatorship, together with V√≠ctor D√≠az, Am√©rico Zorrilla, Mario Zamorano and Uldarico Donaire. With the return to democracy, he was one of the main figures who addressed the crisis in the socialist countries and the reconstruction of a project of the revolutionary left. Likewise, he had an active role in the agreements that allowed the return of the PC to Congress in 2010 and promoted the pact that allowed the communists to return to government with President Michelle Bachelet in 2014. The 4 volumes that we present cover a large part of the extensive journalistic and political work of this outstanding leader of the Chilean left. Arranged in chronological sequence, the texts collect the main part of his intellectual elaboration from the 1960s to the beginning of the 21st century (Volumes I, II, III). Volume IV is a selection of the most relevant of his career, facilitating the documentary relationship contained in the previous volumes. Undoubtedly, due to the breadth of the compilation made, the whole of this work will be extremely useful both for specialists in history, and for the consultation of interested parties in general. Finally, the contributions of Isabel Torres and Rolando √Ålvarez, both historians, help to enhance the meaning of the performance that Jorge Insunza took on.

This volume presents articles by Iván Szelényi – William Graham Sumner Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Yale University since 50 years. The world has changed a lot in this half century. When the first contribution to this volume was published in 1969, Hungary was the “goulash communism” of János Kádár. Its disintegration began in the 1980s and in 1989/90 transitioned into “market capitalism” that looked like a bourgeois-liberal democracy. Finally, in 2014, Viktor Orbán began to realize his vision of an “illiberal regime”. The last article of 2022 deals with the struggles between liberalism and illiberalism. How much coherence in thought and action can one expect from a social scientist in this rapidly changing world? Although Szelényi changed and often fundamentally modified his views over time, all his writings belong to what we call critical social science: immanent critique and ironic examination of both socialism and capitalism. None of his essays recommend either socialism or capitalism as the sole solution, but he tried to give, as far as possible, an objective analysis of what was possible in the most turbulent times of the last half century, leaving the ideological-political decision to the readers. This essay draws on the first (of two) edited volumes of ISSA dedicated to "Postcolonialismi Italiani ieri e oggi appunti (sudafricani) per una (ri)concettualizzazione 'rizomatica' dei postcolonial Italian studies" (Virga, Zuccala 2018) and on some of the new concepts introduced therein. The essay tackles in a more thorough fashion and from a broader perspective some of the methodological and terminological issues raised - albeit in a necessarily cursory manner (and in Italian) - in Virga and Zuccala 2018. The essay starts by geographically positioning writers in the context of global academia and claiming an epistemological consequence of their geographical position. It then gives an overview of the field of postcolonial Italian studies in order to explain how the concept of rhizome, when applied meta-critically to the whole field, might provide a useful starting point for a paradigmatic reconceptualization of postcolonial Italian studies.
